ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Facing the challenges of globalization and the knowledge economy,the Muslim world is lagging behind in many aspects of human development. The best way for Muslims to regain their lost glory is by equipping themselves with the right knowledge, skills and values.

In the spirit of revitalizing teacher education in the Muslim World, and in conjunction with IIUM's silver jubilee celebration, the Institute of Education will be hosting an international conference on the above theme. The conference will be held for three days from July 14-16, 2008 in Kuala Lumpur and will be co-hosted by the Islamic Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO).

CONFERENCE THEME

“Addressing Issues and Challenges in the Muslim World through Reviving and Revitalizing Teacher Education”

OBJECTIVES OF THE CONFERENCE

The main objectives of the conference are to:

1. share experiences and develop scholarship on teacher education in the Muslim world

2. establish a global network of collaboration among Muslim teacher educators, policy makers, scholars and administrators

3. initiate collaboration among OIC countries for developing a quality assurance framework for the accreditation and certification of teacher education programs in the Muslim world.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

The conference is expected to bring about the following outcomes:

• Publication of edited books on teacher education in the Muslim world

• Formulation of acceptable standards of teacher education and training in the Muslim world

• Initiate efforts towards the accreditation and certification of teachers in the Muslim world

• The establishment of a network among Muslim teacher educators for collaboration in areas related to research and innovation

• The establishment of the International Society of Muslim Educators (ISME)
